  • What does the phrase ‘like cures like’ mean in Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is based on the pillar of ‘like cures like’. The medicines are prepared from various sources such as plants, animals or minerals. Dr Amit Pandey, homeopathic consultant, Pandey homoeo clinic, Uttarakhand, explains, When a substance derived from natural sources (such as plants, minerals, or animal products) produces specific symptoms in a healthy person, those symptoms are recorded in a reference book called “Materia Medica.” Later, when an individual with similar symptoms seeks treatment, the homeopathic practitioner administers a highly diluted form of the same substance. The idea is that “like cures like”—the substance that caused the symptoms in a healthy person can help alleviate similar symptoms in a sick person.
  • What does a homoeopath need to know about a person to prescribe the right medicine?
Homeopathic medicines are prescribed through a process called individualisation. Dr Pandey says, “If two persons come with similar health conditions, each of them will get a different medicine that is customized to their needs. For this customization, we need to take a detailed history of the person.” The practitioners look into the cause of the ailment, the symptoms and genetic history. They also observe the individual’s emotions, thoughts, feelings and other psychological aspects in detail and prescribe the medicine accordingly. Indeed, Dr. Pandey’s emphasis on a comprehensive medical history aligns with the holistic approach of homeopathy. By understanding an individual’s health journey from childhood to the present, homeopaths can tailor remedies more effectively. Additionally, considering the onset of symptoms—whether sudden or gradual—helps guide remedy selection.
  • Why do most of the homoeopathic medicines look the same?
Homeopathic medicines are given in different forms such as globules(the small round pills), drops, ointments, creams among which globules are most commonly used. Dr. Pandey’s observation highlights a unique aspect of homeopathic remedies. Unlike conventional pills, which may vary in appearance, homeopathic pills maintain consistency not only in their visual appearance but also in their smell and taste. This attention to detail reflects the precision and individualization inherent in homeopathy. Dr. Pandey’s explanation sheds light on the intriguing world of homeopathic remedies. Those seemingly innocuous sugary globules serve as carriers for the liquid homeopathic medicines applied to their surface. It’s crucial not to touch the globules directly; instead, we use the bottle cap to handle them. The familiar scent arises from the alcohol-based nature of these medicines.
  • Are homeopathic pills safe for people with diabetes?
Homeopathic pills are typically made from lactose or sucrose (common table sugar). Let’s delve into the details: Lactose: Many homeopathic pills use lactose as their base material. Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk. Despite its origin, the amount of lactose in these pills is very small and usually won’t trigger symptoms in individuals with lactose intolerance. The pills are often taken sublingually (under the tongue), minimizing the amount that reaches the intestine. Sucrose (Table Sugar): Some homeopathic pills are made from sucrose (also known as saccharose). These tiny pills contain highly diluted forms of natural substances—derived from plants, minerals, or animal products—that are believed to have healing properties. Both lactose and sucrose can be considered safe for people with diabetes, but let’s explore the details: Lactose (from dairy products): Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. Most people with diabetes can tolerate lactose without adverse effects. The amount of lactose in typical homeopathic pills is very small and unlikely to impact blood sugar levels significantly. Sucrose (common table sugar): Sucrose consists of equal parts glucose and fructose. It’s found in common table sugar and some homeopathic pills. While sucrose can raise blood sugar levels, the small amount in homeopathic pills is unlikely to cause significant issues. Always consult your doctor or a registered dietitian for personalized advice on sugar intake and diabetes management
  • Do these medicines have side effects?
Homeopathic medicines are diluted as homeopaths believe that only a small dose of the original material is enough to trigger the body’s healing response. By diluting the medicine, the side effects and addiction to the original material are reduced. A study published in the British Homeopathic Journal in 2000 looked at adverse effects published from 1970 to 1995 and found that the medicines are generally safe, and they are unlikely to trigger reactions.
  • Can we complement homeopathic medicine with modern medicine?
Certainly! Complementing homeopathic medicine with modern medicine is a common approach. Here’s how they can work together: Holistic Approach: Homeopathy focuses on treating the whole person, addressing physical, emotional, and mental aspects. Modern medicine (allopathy) emphasizes evidence-based treatments and disease management. Coexistence and Synergy: Many people use both approaches simultaneously. Homeopathy may complement conventional treatments by supporting overall well-being and reducing side effects. Consult both a homeopath and a medical doctor for personalized guidance. Safety and Communication: Always inform your doctors about all treatments you’re using. Be open about your preferences and experiences to ensure safe integration. Remember, individual responses vary, so personalized advice is crucial. 😊
